The Mobile Telecommunications (MT) group, was founded in 2006. The group’s research develops new concepts, models, algorithms, and protocols in design, analysis, and performance engineering of wireless communication networks, and the applications of telecommunication technology in transportation, internet of things, and smart cities.
The Internet has become wireless. The key enabler of this development has been the rapid deployment of high speed mobile access networks, such as 4G/5G, Wi-Fi, and the integration of these technologies. Two performance fields have risen within this context. The first is the evolution of the physical-layer transmission technology, while the second is that of performance engineering from a networking perspective. The latter is the core of the research excellence of the MT group.
Our research covers a wide spectrum of performance engineering aspects in wireless communications. Classical topics in the field are radio resource management, routing in multi-hop radio networks and traffic engineering, and cross-layer optimization. Wireless network optimization, cellular network planning, quality of service assurance, as well as mobility management and Internet of things form major research themes of the group.
A key expertise area is network optimization that enables a radio access network to maximally exploit the capacity of the transmission layer. Optimization applies to the deployment of radio elements, its parameter configuration, and resource allocation. Optimization is also a powerful tool in understanding the performance limits of wireless communications.
The group’s research extends to the applications of mobile communication technologies in other major sectors of the society. A good example is wireless networking for intelligent transportation systems in smart cities.
Taking an integrated approach that has its roots in complementary scientific tools, including mathematical optimization, queuing theory, algorithmic analysis, and computer modeling and simulation, the MT group’s research delivers cutting edge methodology to performance engineering in the era of the Wireless Internet.
